Calculating Freight Class

It All Adds Up

Classifying freight is a sum of moving parts.

Freight class is a large factor is determining shipping prices and is tabulated by these factors: density, stowability, handling requirements, liability exposure.  The lower the density, the higher the class number.

Density: determined by dividing an object’s mass by its volume.

Stowability: demensions of freight determine how easily it’s stowed.

Handling Requirements: these are level of precautions and consideration taken when moving freight; more volatile products require additional care.

Liability Exposure: this is measured by the danger the freight poses in transit to all parties to the transaction.
